Tasting notes
The wines are concentrated, with good depth of fruit, and very well structured, albeit lighter than those of Roc de Cambes itself. It goes without saying that they will age well.
Viticulture
The « terroir » of Domaine de Cambes is the part of Château Roc de Cambes lying immediately beside the estuary of the Gironde which flows at the foot of the slope. Such a situation at the base of a hillside is common among celebrated growths in the Bordeaux region. Furthermore, in this particular location, the Gironde makes a dual contribution, adding deposits of silt and providing a moderating influence on the micro-climate.
On analysis, the soil here proves to be of basic origins, a classic mix of clay and limestone. Such soils remain cool, allowing for an extended growing season, which in turn provides for the possibility of a late harvest of relatively powerful wines.
We may also acknowledge that these vineyard sites were patronised and protected by the Dutch, who taught us to defend them from the high tides of the estuary and therefore the Atlantic itself.
